Intent
Through an enquiry approach, and using the National Curriculum for science, we aim to ensure that all pupils:
- Are encouraged to be inquisitive and have a desire to find out answers to their own questions in class and with interest in the world around them.
- Develop resilience through seeing that they will not always get the results they expect and things will not always go right, alongside conversations about how the issue is noticed and resolved.
- Understand how their learning of science is relevant and show curiosity about natural phenomena.
- Use technical vocabulary to explain what they are observing or the experiment they are conducting.

We are proud to announce that we have been awarded Primary Science Quality Mark (PSQM)
The PSQM has been awarded to celebrate our commitment to excellence in science leadership, teaching and learning. So far, since its national launch in 2010, more than 5000 Primary Science Quality Marks (PSQM) have been awarded, creating a solid foundation of quality science education for over 1,000,000 children.
PSQM is a comprehensive evidence-based professional development programme that effectively develops science leadership, ensuring teachers have the knowledge, capability and support they need to transform science education and shape future generations.
The Primary Science Quality Mark is led by the University of Hertfordshire.
Helen Sizer, PSQM Co-Director said: ‘By enabling effective science leadership, PSQM is powering the potential of all children to see the relevance and importance of science in their lives, now and in the future. Schools that have achieved a Primary Science Quality Mark have demonstrated a significant commitment to science leadership, teaching and learning and the profile and quality of science in each accredited school is very high. Science subject leaders, their colleagues, headteachers, children, parents and governors should be very proud.”

Science Club runs termly, with opportunities for all classes to attend across the year. A variety of practical activities are used within the club.
Term 1: Year 3 and 4
In Science Club this term, we have been learning about insulating materials. We started off with an experiment where we needed to protect an ice cube to stop it from melting. We also looked at how penguins stay warm by huddling together. At the end of term, we looked at the James Webb Space Telescope, what is does and had a go at making our own model. The inside of the telescope must stay cold so the insulating materials were very important!
Term 2: EYFS and Years 1 and 2
Since the first week was close to bonfire night, we made chromatography fireworks and fireworks in a jar.
Term 3: Book club
We were very lucky to have received 6 books from the Royal Society, as part of the Young People's book prize. As Science Club, we read the books and voted on different areas of the book, such as the ease of reading and how much it inspired us to be scientists.
The children enjoyed taking turns to be the chair of the meeting, who was responsible for gathering data, before an average result was calculated. Every week, there was a big reveal before we went home to compare our scores to the other books we had read.
Our findings are shown in the school corridor. The favourite book was 'Am I Made of Stardust' by Dr Maggie Aderin-Pocock, which is aimed at children in KS2.
At the start of Term 4, some brave members of Science Book Club recommended their favourite book to the rest of the school during celebration assembly. We are looking forward to finding them in the library to share with our friends!
