Year 3 Art

Term 1

This term the children have been learning about the Stone Age. We looked at examples of cave art and had a go at being cave artists by sitting under our tables and drawing on the ‘ceiling’ and sitting outside and drawing on the playground with chalks. We discovered that it’s pretty hard drawing and painting on rough surfaces and upside down!
We then created some old looking paper by repeatedly screwing it up and unscrewing it and then adding little marks using chalk. Finally, we created templates of hands and animals and stippled paint on to create our work. At the end of the project we had to think of suitable titles for our work. We really enjoyed being Stone Age artists!

Term 2

This term, Year 3 have been very busy finding out about volcanoes and earthquakes.

In their art lessons they have been learning about all sorts of materials that they can use to create collages such as papier mache, sawdust, glitter, sand, straws, stones, pipe cleaners, tissue paper and fabric. They had to plan and create their very own volcano collages using some of these ideas. I think you'll agree that their volcanoes are looking fabulous!

 

 

Term 3

This term we have been learning about the Romans and in art we have been looking at mosaics. We talked about the problems that Roman artists might have had when creating mosaics and also considered how the work should be treated in the future. We then created our own mosaics.
For homework we were also given a Roman art challenge as we had to design and make shields. Everyone was really impressed with our amazing shields. Keep up the fabulous work, year 3!

Term 4

Year 3’s topic this term was Italy. We studied the work of artist Toni Silber-Delerive and had a discussion about her work. We agreed that she quite often uses bright, bold colours and that her art is quite graphical.

We then looked at a photo of Cinque Terre in Italy and each had to make a house based on one of these out of coloured paper. We put them altogether to create one big town which we thought looked fabulous.

Mrs Clarkson took a photo of it and edited it so that the houses filled up a whole page. We then used little frames to select parts of the picture and designed our own work similar to Toni Silber-Delerive’s ‘Cinque Terre Houses’ painting.

After that we had to paint our houses on large sheets of paper. Finally, we thought about what title we would give our work and also worked as a class team to put them in different compositions. We noticed that the smaller houses looked better at the top as they gave the work a better sense of perspective.

 

 

Term 5

Year 3 have been finding out about the work of artist Georgia O’Keefe. We talked about how her artwork was created and the types of colours that she used. We then did our own observational drawings, trying to focus in on small parts of the flower. After that we drew our own flowers using oil pastels and looking in our art books for ideas. Finally we painted over them using watercolour paints and looking at a colour wheel to make our work stand out. We were all pleased with our finished work.

Term 6

In art over the last few weeks, Year 3 have been working as a team to think about how to create a 3D piece of art based on Monet’s famous water lily paintings. They all did their own design and we picked ideas from a selection of them.

We ended up making:

• Clay water lilies and water lily pads that we painted.
• A bridge that we could stand on.
• Some reeds using willow sticks and tissue paper that we stuck in flower arranging oasis.
• Tissue paper water lilies
• Painted stones

Today we worked as a team to draw a huge chalk pond and colour it in on the playground. We then carefully put the bridge, reeds, water lilies and pads into position. Our parents came into school at the end of the day to see our artwork and take some photos of us on the bridge.  They thought that our work was fabulous!
